OPIS seeks two reporters to cover European oil products markets.
Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), a growing and successful company within the privately held UCG Group, is seeking two outstanding Europe-based reporters.
One gasoline reporter
You’ll work independently as a contractor from a base of your own choosing. This is a role for someone with substantial experience of gasoline market price reporting, or with trading, broking or operations experience of the gasoline or naphtha market in Europe and a demonstrable ability to write in English.
You’ll have a large network of contacts and be able to travel into central London by 11am on a working day. OPIS produces four-page daily market reports including price assessments, forward market analysis, news and commentary. We envisage a period of daily travel into central London, or possibly into Edinburgh, for training purposes, and some extended periods of travel and accommodation away from home for the same reason. But this too will ultimately be an independent role and we’re therefore looking for someone with experience of working on their own initiative.
You are likely to have experience of market reporting, but might be using your qualifications and background in journalism to launch a new career in price reporting. Alternatively, you may be moving from a trading, broking or ops environment to become a reporter, based on your interest in writing and analysis.
In this role you will assist with the publication of our jet and gasoline market coverage and help maintain market intelligence tools covering oil products and oil product shipping. You’ll need to be flexible and adaptable and interested in broadening your knowledge and making new contacts.
OPIS and its European markets team
OPIS has a staff of 160 based mainly in Maryland and New Jersey, USA.
You’ll be part of a tight-knit team of home and office-based reporters and other contractors here in Europe, who along with colleagues from Singapore to Central America, extend OPIS’s reach beyond its Gaithersburg, Maryland base. OPIS’s European reporters can use office space in London as required and sometimes rent shared office space near their homes.
OPIS has ambitious plans to grow, based on producing the highest quality of market intelligence and has generated sustained year on year revenue growth. OPIS is part of the UCG Group, whose mission is to produce high quality products, make money and have fun.
The following attributes are also usually found in people we hire
- Excellent written English
- A higher qualification, likely to be in journalism or economics
- Demonstrable experience in reporting or writing to deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and running a mac or pc
- Experience of working on a self-directed basis
- Deep knowledge of oil commodity markets
- Ability to deliver to deadline and handle evening working on a rotation
- A second European language
- Ability to operate as a freelance business or interest in learning to
We offer a competitive contract, on-the-job and off-site training, the ability to work on your own initiative and travel opportunities to worldwide commercial centres, including to events like our recent Connemara and Bruges international team retreats.
How to apply:
Take a look at the UCG group and OPIS website and then drop us a line if you're interested, attaching your CV and telling us in a few paragraphs how who you are matches with what we're looking for.
Please indicate the role you are applying for in the subject line of the email.
